In the Spotlight
SUNDAY, November 1, 2009
noon to 2 p.m.
during brunch at NuNu's Cafe
Lâche Pas is a trio of women, all of whom moved to Southwest Louisiana to follow their passion for Cajun and Creole music. Their music is inspired by Dennis McGee, Canray Fontenot, Mitch Reed, Ed Poullard, and the Balfa Brothers, among others.
Lâche Pas is Madeline Powers on accordion/fiddle/vocals, Linda Castle on fiddle/vocals, and Andrea Rubinstein on guitar.
Three special guests will be joining Lâche Pas on stage this Sunday: Daniel Gale (from Ohio), Sara Le Menestral (from Paris) and Mark Marcin (from San Francisco). All three of our friends share the same love of Cajun and Creole music that we do, and we are delighted to be able to perform together.
Raised in Ohio, Daniel Gale started playing classical fiddle and bluegrass violin at age 4 after seeing Itzhak Perlman on Sesame Street. He began studying Cajun/Creole fiddle in '98 with Mitch Reed and Kevin Wimmer at a workshop in W. VA, first visited SW Louisiana in '99, then moved here in '05 for the music. He has spent countless hours listening to recordings of Bois Sec Ardoin, Octa Clark and Hector Duhon, and the Mamou Playboys, among many other local greats.
Sara Le Menestral has been coming to Louisiana since 1992 and started playing the 'tit fer before picking up the fiddle, first encouraged by Christine Balfa and Dirk Powell. For several years, Sara resided in Louisiana, studying and playing performing Cajun/Creole music, before returning to Paris in 2008. Her fiddle playing reflects her love of the musical styles of Dennis McGee and Wade Fruge.
Mark Marcin fell in love with Cajun/Creole music when he lived in Lafayette in the 90's. He has studied accordion with Ray Abshire, Ed Poullard, Jesse Lege and Steve Riley. He plays accordion and fiddle with the San Francisco Bay Area trio the Midnite Ramblers.
